Street Photography and the Stefan Lubo Embankment QuizTrail

Hello Trailblazers around the world!

Have you tried my "Stefan Lubo" amazing "Embankment Photo Trail" in London where you can enjoy beautiful secret places?
Not yet? Come on, you just need to download it on your iPhone on www.quiztrail.com/store - and play!

Its all about discovering London in a fresh and exciting way, finding hidden corners with the opportunity of winning prizes by doing some street photography.

but first a few words on the subject of street photography, why I love it, mixed in with some samples taken over the years on various Leica's, Nikon's and most recently what with smartphones being so popular and ubiquitous a Sony Xperia Z.

Having started taking pictures with a Brownie Box camera at the age of eight, I have always been fascinated by my environment and have generally seen it in a positive light. Early photography was mostly of family and friends but it was always informal and taken whenever the urge to record a moment came over me, so even in the home it had the character of street photography.

Whilst at school in Yorkshire, my first self-developed, black and white film was of an Air force helicopter landing on the cricket pitch and my school chums ordered prints to show their families. I went on to run the school then university photography clubs and kept clicking away whilst working as a civil engineer in the UK, Switzerland and the Sultanate of Oman, then later as a project manager in charge of developing private hospitals and nursing homes all over the country. Then setting up and owning an internet consultancy for eight years taught me the power of images in the internet age and led me finally to turn my lifelong hobby into a profession, which I have practiced since 2006 as distinguished photography , keeping a nice balance between commissioned and personal work.

The passion for street photography comes from the urge to record striking scenes in virtually any place or situation: right on my doorstep in Fulham, in the bustling side streets of Soho and Southwark, Durham at dawn, Lisbon at Christmas, at 45 degrees in the Kalahari desert in Namibia and minus 20 degrees in the Mazurian lakes and towns of northern Poland and a myriad more.
I have an aesthetic eye, so I am drawn to pleasing, striking compositions, often where people interact with their environment of things, other people, foreground and background, movement and stillness. Sometimes, Black & White allows the shapes to be more graphic and the information be restrained, other times it is precisely the colour that is the message.

I like working with the Leica M series as they are quiet, small, cover only part of your face and have a frame in the viewfinder that allows you to see what is going on outside it. Sometimes, surreptitious photography works with the subjects unaware they are being photographed. At other times, a second's eye contact, will tell you if it's OK or not. Often, you can make lifelong friends by simply showing people the pictures you took, on the back of the camera, or coming back later with some small prints.
Finally, comes the fun and the feedback from sharing your pictures, with friends, family and work mates. Maybe even an exhibition in a gallery, or as is now ubiquitous doing so, via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest etc. and last but not least Quiztrail can add the icing to the cake, taking you on interesting routes, telling you surprising facts and stories and getting you to deeply know your surroundings. The feedback you get from all these sources constantly helps your photography develop as does looking at other peoples work.

So please get out there with your cameras and smart phones and explore and capture what you see, from your doorstep to the farthest reaches of your world and let's see the results!

Sustainable haircut & Thames side views

This week I strolled along the Fulham Road and spied this scene outside a hairdresser - the future of hairdressing is green and sustainable! - Leica M9 90mm F2.8 at full aperture 400 ISO
Later that day I crossed Tower Bridge on my way to a meeting and caught the Shard and the Mayor's Office against a lowering sky and a detail of Tower Bridge itself. - Leica M9 35mm F2 at F8 400 ISO

Rain or Shine Havaiana's hit London!

Sharing propelled by ebuzzing

RAIN or SHINE?

On April, 14th, Havaianas hosted the very first festival of the year…right in the centre of London! The RAIN OR SHINE indoor festival took place in the Ultra Lounge of Selfridges (Oxford Street, London, UK) to celebrate the global launch of the new Rain Boots range!

I accompany this announcement with some of my pictures of London, in the spirit of this fun happening!
Surprising? Not really considering that it’s Always Summer with Havaianas ;)
Guests enjoyed Brazilian cocktails by Sagatiba but also traditional British brews while sampling a mixture of the best Brazilian and British festival foods including Tacos, Fajitas, Mini Fish n'Chips & Burgers.
Musical artist Jamie Woon wowed the guests with music from his recently launched album ‘Mirrorwriting’ and Daisy Lowe got the party going spinning tunes from the DJ booth.

Dance artists ‘Brazilian Fantasy’ took to the floor and created dance frenzy toward the end of the night when all of the guests really ‘gave it some rain boots!’
Among the British and International famous guests: Daisy Lowe- Bombay Bicycle Club – Clara Paget –  Jade Parfit  –  Harry Treadaway – Kate Moross – Laura Whitmore – Nat Weller – Jamie Woon – Tolula Adeyemi – Misty Miller – Luke Evans – Is Tropical – Lara Bohinc – Leo Gregory – Mary Charteris - Clare Maguire – Jameela Jamil – Lara Bohinc– Laura Jackson.

The Rain Boots collection is composed of 8 colours (2 unisex and 6 feminine): Green, Black/Yellow, Pink/Light Blue, Purple/Pink, Grey/Pink, Turquoise/White, Always Summer and Elegance. They cost between 45 and 50 pounds, depending on the colours. For the time being, they are only available at Selfridges and on www.selfridges.com
Very soon, you’ll be able to get them on www.havaianas-store.co.uk so we recommend you to enter your email on that page in order to be the first to know about their availability.
What about you? RAIN or SHINE?

Haunch of Venison Chiharu Shiota

This morning I popped into the Haunch of Venison Gallery, temporarily occupying Burlington House behind the Royal Academy and very much enjoyed what I saw there, H of V seem to have the knack of getting very edgy, exotic artists doing really experimental stuff, that elsewhere I hate, but here I love.

Also to their enormous credit they don't mind people taking photographs and seem positively to encourage it, and most visitors who had a camera or a camera phone seemed to be at it.

I did not have my camera, but had my trusty Blackberry and took pictures of two works by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota an amazing room with a bed, amidst a vast web of string creating a tunnel through which one traverses and a room with a stunning architectural scale pieces created with window frames creating a cathedral style of space - magnificent. For more about the artist see this website.

On the way out I snapped this installation by some other artist - I think!

You can see more of my pictures in a slideshow.

Tomorrow I will try to go again, this time with my Leica M8 and capture it in more detail. Still I find the 2 megapixel Blackberry creates its own ethereal effect which I quite like, tweaked slightly in Adobe Lightroom.

Sloane Street one evening in London

The other day, I walked along Sloane Street, at the Knightsbridge end, skirting Cadogan Gardens with my trusty Leica M8 in my hand and spotted the following:

Why is NO! the main thing said at the entrance to public and private spaces??

Here the lovely light caught my eye, nature, fenced off and lit.

On Sloane Street it self I was amused by "reopenig soon" sign at the Roberto Cavali store making me think "did the sign writer have a cold?"
Finally it all came together in this picture with beautiful colour and light in the mundane - Thank you Leica!

London 2012 Olympics development

On May 5th I am attending another London Independent Photography workshop, this time on reportage photography given by Brian Harris, who has asked us to photograph "progress" on the 2012 Olympics development.

So far I have walked round the Olympic Park South Walk which borders the development, taking photos which I show in a slideshow. For someone who lives in West London and who thinks East London is an industrial landscape, my trip to the Lea Valley was a revelation with lots of greenery and wildlife, mixed in with dereliction and new developments. The fishermen I came across had recently caught 12 & 1/2 lb Bream!

As you will see, one can't really see any development going on, apart from the odd crane or machine, so I will keep trying to gain access to the works themselves up to the last minute!.

Face on a phone box

I liked this bit of graffiti on a phonebox in Knightsbridge, London, snapped with my Leica M6 on a rainy day. The sticker for "design brighton" seemed to fit.
